Fernando Braune is a Brazilian artist and photographer, born in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, in 1957. He graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and completed the university extension course African Ancestral Reconnection. He also pursued complementary studies in art history, art criticism, and philosophy of art.
His artistic career began in 1983 with his first solo exhibition, Aqui Brasil, the result of a 40-day photographic expedition through Brazil’s Northeast.
In 1999, Braune was selected for the National Portfolio Review by the National Arts Foundation (Funarte), marking the beginning of his experiments with photographic installations. From 2004 to 2009, he curated the event Olhares Fotográficos, bringing together leading photographers and visual artists from across Brazil.
He has participated in major international exhibitions in cities such as London, New York, Lisbon, Florence, Barcelona, and Monaco, among others. He has received several awards, including the Latin American Art Award in Milan (2016) and the Naples Award for Contemporary Art (2014).
The author of several books on photography and aesthetics — including Surrealism and Photographic Aesthetics and Poetics of Uncertainty — Braune currently develops an artistic practice that combines printing images on cotton paper with manual interventions in pastel and charcoal. His work blends digital and traditional techniques to create a unique visual universe.
